What Is an NGB?
A National Governing Body regulates and administers a sport at national level, working with Sport England and UK Sport to access specialist services, knowledge, funding and development opportunities.
The British Taekwondo Council brings standards, structure, support and accountability to Taekwondo organisations and instructors.
A National Governing Body regulates and administers a sport at national level, working with Sport England and UK Sport to access specialist services, knowledge, funding and development opportunities.
Schools, sports centres, councils and private venues may require clubs to be registered with a recognised Sport England organisation and may request DBS, insurance and qualification evidence.
Without NGB affiliation, a club may fall into the unregulated category, where organisations and venues can have concerns about accountability and minimum expected standards.
Being part of a National Governing Body gives the public, venue operators, parents and students assurance that recognised requirements are being addressed.
BTC must meet the criteria set by Sport England and UK Sport to maintain its NGB status and access funding to continue and develop.
In today's world, training for years and earning black belts is no longer accepted as a guarantee of a competent, responsible and accountable Instructor or Coach.
Modern Taekwondo coaching requires appropriate training, safeguarding, insurance, professional conduct and accountability — not simply a belt around the waist.
Renewed Every 3 Years
Representatives attend quarterly membership meetings, receive financial and membership updates, debate topics and vote on decisions.
Members and independent professionals manage the organisation and help ensure its NGB status is maintained.
Much of the work is voluntary or expenses only — all for the good of Taekwondo.
We develop and implement the structure, governance and systems, provide high quality training and support, and help ensure coaches and organisations have the skills, safe practices and knowledge required in today's modern sporting world.
It gives you credibility with students, parents and other organisations and helps you build a successful, respected Taekwondo school.
The BTC aligns with the National Code of Sports Governance 2021, including Tier 3 criteria for Sport England funding partners and organisations with NGB status, the NSPCC/CPSU Advance Safeguarding Standards for Children in Sport, and the DBS Code of Practice for Registered Bodies.
More than a licence. It's about standards, safety and accountability.
